You note the ~1M row limit in grid Excel. Do you think connecting to larger datasets through Power Query is too different from formulas and functions to count as “Excel”?
I think it starts to feel more like a BI tool, it's less tangible to the business user they can’t see the cell where something was calculated.
It’s also one of the features very few of the userbase know how to use.
